Hi

I have been reading alot about it being better to use vector files for printing.

i.e I have been using Photoshop psd to produce stationery designs, but is it better to use say illustrator are it creates vector images/ designs ?

What I've read is that vectors are not suited to photographic images, if this is so how is it useful for say designing a leaflet or brochure.

Thanks

Ash

  1. If you are designing a leaflet or brochure, you most likely would not use either to lay it out. You would use Photoshop for elements that work well in raster (photos) and Illustrator to create elements that work better with vector data (logos and line art). Then you would put all of the elements together in a layout program like InDesign or Quark XPress.

If you can only choose between Photoshop and Illustrator, pick Illustrator. You DO NOT need to convert the raster data from the photographs to vector data in Illustrator, so you can just place those files in as is AND you're going to see a huge difference in any typographical elements by keeping them as vector data, especially if you are going to print on a press. As a general rule, don't use Photoshop for type.
