Question:

A question about an ear infection

Emma has had a bad ear infection. We tried treating it at home for a few days, but eventually had to go to the doctor. She said both ears were inflamed and one had fluid. She also had blisters in her throat (she had been coughing a little). She put her on Amoxicillian for ten days. Well, tomorrow will be the tenth day and she is still pulling at her ears and her cough is a little worse (which could be from teething...she has cut four teeth in the past month). Shouldn't she be better by now? Any personal experience?

  1. Amoxicillian is a more mild antibiotic. And the couple times it was prescribed to my daughter for ear infections, it didn't work. She always needed something stronger. In fact, with the last couple ear infections that she had, I specifically asked for a different antibiotic.

I would take her in to make sure the infection is gone.

  2. Admittedly I am not a doctor, nurse, or health professional of any type BUT teething doesn't cause throat blisters and if an antibiotic is going to work you normally see some improvement after 72 hours.

    Can you see the blisters?

    Is there a rash anywhere?

    Fever?

Eye pain/Sensitivity to light? (Haha I know how would you figure that out with a baby)

    I'm thinking:

    -Hand foot and mouth disease

    -Chicken pox

    -Erythema multiforme

    -Stevens-Johnson Syndrome

  3. well my daughter had A LOT of ear infections when she was young. don't hesitate and take her to the doctor right away. dont try to treat it yourself! sometime Amox. isn't strong enough so the doctor will give you a prescrption for something stronger.

we tried 3 different antibiotics before we found one that worked for her. also you dont want to ignore it because if it goes on too long she might need tubes in her ears which requires surgery,

  4. Our pediatrician has been trying different antibiotics on Landon because Amixicillian is not strong enough to clear up his ear infections. The doctor also told me the infection can be gone, and they can still have fluid in their ear, which bothers them so they will pull at it. So, I would say even if they are not hurting, her ears are probably still bothering her.

  5. It sometimes takes a while for the fluid to completely drain from the ear, hence the pulling ears.  Did you doctor want to see you for a recheck after finishing the antibiotic?  My doctor always wanted to see my daughter 10-14 days after she went to the doctors.

If after tomorrow she still isn't quite right, I would take her back to the doctor to have it rechecked.

    Hope she feels better

  6. You might need different meds. An ear infection should show improvement in 48 hrs of the meds are helping correctly. I would go back to the doctor to have her ears re-checked.

  7. I think you should get another kind of medicine that works for her. Because once I got Blisters in my throat and I had this medicine that my doctor gave me but then it didnt go away so then I asked her for another kind and the blisters in my throat had gone away.
