Question:

A question about blue eyes

Okay, so one of my best friends was born to a Japanese father and a fullblooded Lakota Sioux mother.

He has prussian blue eyes (that's like bluish grey)....and says he has no clue where they came from.

So, by my deductive reasoning....isn't it possible that his Japanese father has a European ancestor?

  1. The inheritance pattern followed by blue eyes is considered similar to that of a recessive trait, however it is a polygenic trait (meaning that it is controlled by the interactions of several genes, not just one). So it is really complicated and there is no simple answer.

Humans have several eye color genes. Two of these genes are named bey2 (brown eye) and gey (green eye).

Genes come in flavors called alleles.

The bey2 gene has two flavors - brown and blue.

The gey gene also has two flavors - green and blue.

  2. Both parents would have to carry the recessive gene for blue eyes.
