A question about food stamps?

I am wondering if having a house payment gets deducted from the total earned income in being eligible for food stamps? I am wondering this because if it doesnt matter we would make 46 dollars to much for 5 people in Kansas. Please let me know if they include that and utilities or does it not matter. Thanks a lot.

  1. Call your local health and welfare office they can tell you where to go to fill out paperwork to see if you qualify, and have you meet with a social worker that will go over everything with you.

  2. The laws vary state to state but this is sort of how it goes:  They take income (pre taxes), subtract rent you pay, subtract utilities (actual or standard). If there are any disabled in family, they subtract unpaid medical bills.  They allow a deduction of so much for every household member (here in AR it's $134)..that will depend on your state. They do not count things like credit cards, car insurance (though it's mandatory), cable, internet, car payments, etc. They don't count things like life insurance payments, etc. Most of the expenses they don't allow..Here in AR, they allow $10 for the phone bill.. (which about covers the taxes).. After all that, their is a chart that tells them how much you get if you get any.   Understand that they take your assets VERY seriously.. Here in AR, I believe the most you can have in assets (not counting home and car --as long as it's under their book value) is $3000.

Don't know if I explained this very well.. it's really late and I am tired.. If you have any ?, send me a note and I will try to help.
