  1. Achieved. When a person has self determination, he or she is only limited by their own efforts. Human beings like solving problems, planning and hoping for the future and work and careers enable us to do this. If government becomes too paternalistic it deprives us of the need to be responsible for ourselves. Then two things happen. We don’t get those challenges that seem to make us happier. And after a while we might even lose our capacity to make choices, which in terms of happiness is the worst thing that can happen to a person. The welfare state has created a dependent people utterly incapable of finding value in life; instead, they find themselves incapable of typical human feelings such as pride, honor, and empathy.

  2. A society where status is achieved, if everyone was told what they were going to be from birth than there would be know room for people's potential other statuses to come about.

  3. i think it would be achieved if you were looking at human potential. although i think all societies have a level of both. here in america, we are born with an ascribed status that determines whether or not you will have certain kinds of opportunities, but the option of going further is (mostly) open to everyone. it's all about using what you have and working with it to it's full advantage. ascribed doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot to lots of people. you look at those little rich kids who never take advatage of their opportunities and choose to just skim by on school and life without trying or putting forth full effort. i'm paying my own way through college with scholorships, grants and loans, but it's because i choose to get a higher education (first one in my family!) that it makes my status as a college student all the more valuable to me. so i would say that achieved brings out potential in almost everyone, while ascribed gives more options to only a few. make sure to put down your opinions as well.

  4. a free society

I don't care what political party or government style is in power as long as people have opportunity and means to achieve what they aspire then it is a good society.
