A question about mirena IUD?

i had my IUD inserted today. today will probably be the last day of my period. my doctor told me that she would recommend we use a back up form of birth control this month just to be safe since i was more done with my period than when they usually like to put it in. my question is this...for those out there who have an IUD or nurses who may know better than i. does the IUD take time to work like birth control pills or is my doctor just wanting us to be extra safe. my husband can't really do condoms (not circumcised so they don't stay on). we have waited for three months so waiting another month is doable, but needless to say we are anxious...but the last thing i want is to get pregnant with an IUD. any advice would be much appreciated. how long did you wait before having s*x after yours was inserted?

  1. I had the Mirena and it was a frickin' nightmare. Check out the website to get a better understanding. I had mine removed after 6 weeks because I bled for 6 weeks and was told this was normal. I now have a copper iud which is great for me. I have friends that have Mirena with no issues. Good luck.

  2. i dont have one because  im a guy but i read in a health article that the effects are immediate to some people and yes ur doctor is being extra safe.

  3. I got the Mirena IUD just a few months ago.  My doctor told me it was effective immediately, but to wait a day or two before intercourse, just because there might be some tenderness or bleeding from the procedure.  I think it was probably about a week after getting it that we had s*x.  I had mine inserted when I wasn't getting my period, so I don't know if that really makes a difference in it's effectiveness (my doctor had said it is just easier for insertion during your period).  Hope this helps

  4. Condoms work just as fine on intact (not circumcised) guys, does your husband roll back the f******n before putting them on? I've only ever slept with intact guys and never had a condom come off. Are you sure you guys are using them right or should maybe try a different type?

Anyway I think she just said that to be extra safe because of when in your cycle it was inserted it should be effective immediately. If you still want to use back-up, can you use a diaphragm and spermicide?

  5. I have this and yes she is just being extra careful. My husband and I have been using it with no other protection since I got it a year ago and it has worked wonderfully. Mirena actually works 3 ways... it makes your, for lack or a more pleasant word, discharge thicker so sperm can't get through, it makes your lining thin so eggs can't implant, and in most cases (not all or not for a while) it stops you from ovulating at all. I think the big thing is the "sperm blocker" though.

    I hope this helps.

Oh and we tried it out I think the 3rd day I had it. So don't worry to much and if you are just pull out for a few days.

  6. it's ebout being extra safe, to be sure there is no egg waiting in there.  sorry to sound silly but that's the whole of it.  you need to go through a whole nother cycle so the IUD can block the next egg and the egg that may or may not be in your uterus right now can be evacuated via a period.  uid's work right away at blocking the egg from reaching the uterus, it starts thinnig uterine lining so if an egg gets fertilized it can't implant.  congrats on the IUD choice, i love mine, the one i have is #2 i had one after my son and now i have one after i had my daughter.  i hear you on the uncircumcised issue
