Question:

A question about persecution...?

We know that early Christians were tortured and murdered for their faith at times. Given this fact, how do you feel about the claims of some American Christians that they are now being "persecuted" for their faith?

I am particularly interested in answers from the Christian community. Thanks!

  1. I find the claim on the part of any American Christian that they have been persecuted for their faith in any way - to be absurd.

You are quite correct that there are many examples of the faithful in the early Church being persecuted, and frequently martyred.  For that matter, there are places in the world today where Christians are genuinely persecuted (Nigeria, anyone?).  America is not one of these places.

  2. They just want attention.

  3. In America, it is not bad.  It was not so in the past.  Will not be in the future.  Is only good now by forcing through the courts to uphold its own laws of religious freedom over 50 times in the Supreme Court.

This day, in Russia, Hungary, Africa, several other European countries I can't spell, and across Asia they are being imprisoned, tortured and killed.  In most cases, it is because they will not join other religions in worshiping the state.

In WWII America, this was also the case.  My mother is from a small itty bitty town.  As a child with her brother and sister, they were left standing on the street as the Police of the town arrested my grandparents for giving out religious literature on the street.  So much for freedom of religion.

It wasn't until Nixon that most people learned not to trust the government.  We learned that lesson long before.  Good people wanting to do a good job always go overboard if there are no brakes to their power.  Eventually, it comes down to:  To have a secure America, lock everybody up.  Then no one breaks any laws.
