  1. She probably didn't really feel up to a huge ceremony (the first public event to be televised by the way, watched by people all over the country) just after her dad has died. Well the bad news is, your dad's dead. The good news is, we're having a party!

  2. Immediately after King George VI had drawn his last breath, Her Royal Highness The Princess Elizabeth became "Her Majesty The Queen".

The Coronation ceremony usually takes place many months after, particularly with Queen Elizabeth II, the coronation was 16 months after she became Queen, but the throne was never vacant, not even for a second.

  3. It actually started the day he died.

  4. The moment King George VI died, succession was instantaneous (Monarchy travels faster than light), and despite the long awaited formality, Elizabeth was de Facto Monarch, and hence de Facto Head of State the instant her father died.

Most systems have some sort of lag. Admittedly, it might not usually take 17 months to arrange a Coronation, but what are you going to do?

  5. The uncrowned monarch.

A republic would save all that!!

  6. Elizabeth became Queen Regnant the very moment her father died.Ascension to the throne occurs upon the death of the old monarch .The Coronation is just a ceremonial crowning and anointing of the monarch that takes a great deal of planning. There is no waiting to take on the job, though.Elizabeth was head of state February 6,1952 when her father was proclaimed dead. The tradition is the King is Dead-Long Live the King/Queen(whichever is the heir);the throne is never empty.

  7. A coronation can't be arranged at 10 minutes' notice!

  8. she was queen, she just hadn't had a formal coronation yet

  9. The Princess Elizabeth became Queen as soon as her Dad died, the coronation itself is just a ceromony!

  10. There would've been a document saying as soon as he died she would become Queen, but the official coronation would have to be organised

  11. She became queen the minute her dad died, the coronation is purely the cermonial part...

The coronation is a bit like a Christening - you might be born in 2000, but if you were not Christened until 2001, it doesn't mean you weren't you...

  12. If you are born to inherit the thrown, the second the one holding it dies then you get the crown.   It is a lot like what would happen if something happened to the President, the Vice President takes over, but on a more family like background.

  13. According to ancient tradition, when The Queen was proclaimed Monarch, the Herald declared "The King is dead, Long live The King" - The United Kingdom is simply that - a Kingdom, not a Queendom. Two factors to consider : 1) The late King had to be buried and a period of Royal/National mouring to be observed. 2) The solemnity and majesty of the religious and ceremonial service of the Coronation of the Monarch is a massive and complicated piece of State pageantry  which requires many months of preparation : all world leaders are invited and Royal Houses: something of this magnitude cannot be organised at a minute's notice. Princess Elizabeth became Queen the moment Her beloved Father died.

  14. When her father died, the Queen and her husband were in Kenya.  An official pronounced, "The King is Dead.  Long live the Queen."  She was addressed from this point on as "Your Majesty" (instead of "Your Royal Highness").
