A question about the board game Monopoly...?

I was recently playing monopoly with my family the other night. I landed on the community chest right after Go! (where you collect the 200 dollars) and I got the card that said "Go directly to jail, do not pass go and do not collect 200 dollars". I was collecting my 200 dollars for just passing go (since I just passed it and landed on the community chest, but I did NOT collect it of course from going to jail) My father started arguing that I couldn't collect it because the card said not to and my argument was that I could because I passed it before i landed on the community chest. What do you guys think?

The card was reffering to if you were on a space after jail and before go. To get to jail you would have to go over go technically meaning you should collect two hundred dollars. The card was saying in this case you should not collect the two hundred dollars. Since you had already collected your money and would not have to pass go to get to jail then you do not need to give your money back to the bank. You had passed go before landing on this space not after so you are entitled to your money.

Your father was wrong.  You collected the $200 for landing on community chest; the trip to jail is a separate move where you don't pass go.

It is a matter of timing. The second you land on GO you can collect the $200.00, after you collect you can continue your move and follow what the card says. So your dad is wrong. The card says go to jail, some people follow the board around which is why the card states do not collect $200.00 otherwise some would try to collect it as they head around the board to jail.

You passed it once before landing so you should collect the money. The card states that you should not collect in case you would pass 'GO' on the way around the board to jail. Since you just passed 'GO' already no additional collection would arise since it's impossible to pass it from your current position.

your dad is all wrong. you already passed GO so you earned the $200 dollars that you can keep. if you were before GO and got the jail card you would not get the $200 dollars. but that's not the case so don't worry about it.

COngratulations, the panel-o-experts speak with one voice. The Go square applies first, then you go to jail without collecting $200 AGAIN. You're right, dad's wrong.

you already passed go so you get that 200 dollars.  you would not get another 200 dollars if you had to pass go again in order to get to Jail (which in this situation you would not have to pass go again to get to jail anyway)

So yes you were right...you get that 200 dollars for passing go before the go to jail card was drawn.

sorry but your father was wrong.....to avoid further confusion i would highly recommend getting the money as soon as you get past go.  Explain to ur father that the no collecting was for the jail part. he might have thought you already collected the 200 and was collecting it again. or he could have given it to you without you knowing, if he was the banker.  good luck!

Passing Go (as a part of your regular turn) before landing on any spot entitles you to $200.  It doesn't matter which spot you land on after passing Go.  You were right!
