On my radio station it said something about cell phone service being out because of the ozone leyer or something.

Is this hapenening to anyone else?

On my cell, my mom's and my bro's it keeps saying 'Searching...'

Why would this be happening?

How does this work?

  1. Solar flares can cause problems with cell phone service and destroy parts of the ozone layer.

However, I think that you mean the ionosphere and not the ozone layer.

  2. As the previous answer said - you probably mean the ionosphere.

The ionosphere is a large layer (with sublayers) of charges particles (ions) which reflect radio waves.

If this gets disrupted, it can affect radio signals (including TV and cell phone signals) because the waves don;t reflect in the usual way.

There is a daily cycle in the ionosphere too - which is due to the direct effect of the sun during the day being missing at night. This is why AM radio stations can be heard further away at night. But cell phones shouldn;t have this problem because they work at a higher frequency...
