i am looking into moving to Mexico and living full time. I am only 23 and would have to obviously get a job. I know that some countries do not allow Americans/Foreigners to work because it takes away work from the locals. i was wondering if Mexico has laws like that. Thank you

  1. michael g's answer is very accurate...you would have to find an employer that would be willing to write a paper saying that they couldn't find a Mexican capable of doing the job they're offering you.  Your chances of finding someone who is willing to go through all the trouble to help you get your FM-3 are very slim to none.  I married a Mexican citizen and for that I don't need permission to work here...that's about the only way possible to find a job here!!!

  2. Yes it's called an FM3 - basically the employer would have to furnish a letter and proof that he could not find a Mexican to do the work. Unemployment is around 50% here. Hardly any employers are  going to want to mess around with your immigration problems. Its a simple fact. We see this question quite often here and response id the same - its impossible !

pay is around $10 a day and most work 6 days a week.A 23 year old will have a far better lifestyle and pay in America !

Please vacation but employment for you - NO !

  3. depends where u live, if u live in rich hoods than it would be kinda hard to find a job, but in he ghetto everyone will need you, also depends where u want to work

  4. Agree with Michael totally.

It is obvious you don't have a job lined up in Mexico now so why bother.  Some North Americans think they can work down there doing odd jobs/home repair for other North Americans on vacation and expect their pay in Dollars.

I would rather pay a local who charges local prices.

Other people think they can get a job teaching English in Mexican schools.   It can be done but it would be strictly volunteer - no pay.

    I

  5. Is it legal for a foreigner to work in Mexico?

Yes, provided that you have the right permit.

Permits are gained from the Mexican Government and are issued to people who are sponsored by companies in Mexico (or foreign companies with Mexican operations / subsidiaries), or by people with specific skills required in Mexico. You can enter Mexico to work for a foreign company provided that you do not receive any remuneration directly from a Mexican company or subsidiary.

Permits can also be arranged for investors (i.e. setting up your own company), but you'll need to invest 40,000 times the daily minimum salary* in order to qualify. Casual investors (for example, buying stocks on the Mexican Stock Exchange) can also get resident permits, although as with direct investment, you will need to invest the same amount as above.

*Multiples liable to change without notice

These mechanisms are in place to ensure that you will not be: a) taking jobs that Mexican nationals could otherwise have and/or; b) ensure that if you don't have an immediate income, you have the means to support yourself without relying on the Mexican State in any way
