A question for Teachers (or parents)-?

Would you consider using School House Rock Videos and Songs in your curriculum to help your students? Especially those who struggle with multiplication or verbs/adjectives etc..?

If so, how much would you pay for them? (considering it is likely your school will not foot the bill) It is a set of 4 DVDs, 46 videos and 2 Music Cds with as many songs.

How much is it worth out of pocket? If you would even use them (they were made in the 70's)

(I think that todays highschooler would benefit (not that they's actually watch them) but based on our nations test scores and writing aptitude tests...)

  1. We've got them at my high school (I'm a senior English teacher).

I'd bet your school will foot the bill.  If your department won't, ask the media center specialist.

  2. I home schooled two children,  and i use that sort of thing with both of them, even  though one was born in the 70  and one in the 90,   I even used  used some multiplication rap tapes for the youngest.  When it came to little things and price tags, that is so hard to say, they are worth what ever you think the advantage would be,  the DVD  or cassettes are still sold new,  and i would be apprehensive about the old ones, they may have been played to death,  (( and my kids loved the LOLLY lolly get your adverbs here, and of course even the history ones,   the I am only a Bill was a favorite of both of them,  and Electricity))  so i am a big fan of them, i think they work and they are worth it,   Good luck

  3. I would use them to reinforce what you have already taught your students. I would never plop multiplication rock in the DVD player before actually introducing and teaching  students how to multiply. I am a certified teacher and some of the stuff on School House Rock would have confused me if I was never exposed to it.

  4. school house rock is the greatest thing in the world!!!!

  5. I love those videos!  Before you spend a ton of money on them, consider checking the local library to see if they check them out.  Also, try ebay and amazon.com for used copies.  I think it is a great idea to use them....things haven't changed and they are a great way to learn important information!  Good Luck!

  6. I used them in the classroom for both English and social science and found them effective. Pay whatever you want but check to see if it is tax deductible in your state. In California you can claim any materials you purchase for the classroom as a tax deduction.

  7. For High School? I don't believe that's the best course of action for high school teaching (With the exception of the America Rock set - That set covers all of the fundamentals for American history and Government), although it seems very reasonable for Elementary School.

Yes, it's true that the USA's aptitude and national test scores are poor, I think that's a problem caused by several things.

    1. State incongruencies.

    2. The student's unwillingness to learn.

    3. The teacher's failure to inspire the student.

As for the price, it depends on what you'll be buying.

  8. I am a librarian at a technical/vocational school. Teens and even adults don't have a good grasp of basic math and language skills. Anything you can do to help them is fair game, in my book.

However, I find that adults get turned off by solutions that are geared to young children. Try websites such as www.aplusmath.com to help them make drills to master the skills.

There's so much available on the World Wide Web for basic skills that you might find that you don't need to spend money.

  9. I teach high school and I use them.  They only last a few minutes and they will help some kids.  I got mine off of youtube.  I saved them with realplayer.

  10. should can press the power button on your dvd player at any time when you need to

  11. school house rock got me through school....you better believe i would use them to help out my kids.  I'd pay what ever I had to for them if it helps out a kid.  If I were a teacher I'd be willing to pay for it...its not like it would only be used once.  If a teacher wouldn't be willing to invest that much in helping his/her students they should be a teacher.
