Question:

A question for a vet, or someone who knows a lot about dogs...?

So, my doggy started biting his upper tail area about a week ago. I thought for a while it might be fleas, but then I noticed it was only in that one area. Now, one week later, all the hair is gone from that part of his tail, and its all red and inflamed. I bought some cortisone spray for him, but its not working. Do you have any idea what it is, and what I should do about it?

P.S. Don't know if this helps, but my dog's breed is a Beagle

Thanks so much!!!!!

  1. Flea allergy

  2. The same thing happened to my dog. I put some neosporin in the infected area and put the e-collar around his neck. Next day i took him to the vet and he said my dog had allergies. Take him to the vet. He will know better than all of us here. You can use a little bit of neosporin...it worked on my dog and vet said it was ok to use but always put the e-collar around his neck.

  3. its a hot spot from flees or alergies you can buy medicine for hot spots and just put it on the hot spot every couple hours dont let him chew on it but medicine should calm him down meaning he wont bite at it as much.

  4. My dog had the same problem. One word: hot spots. It was like he was knawing on himself until his fur fell off.... There is hot spot shampoo and spray at all pet stores and stuff. or you can go to the vet and get meds.....hope that helps! :)

  5. It could be a hot spot.  The area needs to be kept clean and dry.  I would contact a vet he may need antibiotics to clear it up.

  6. The first thing I am thinking of is fleas. You can buy any flea cure at walmart or smiths. It also might be she is allergic to someone.  CHeck for discoloration of the pads of her feet, that is a big sign of allergies. It could also be bug bites, infection or a lot of other things. Try the fle treatment and if it doesnt get better with in the next few days take her or him to the vet :D

  7. It could be worms, dry skin, boredom, skin disease. Take him to the vets, im down the vets 2-3 times a week as my cat is ill, wont hurt popping down there. I wouldnt leave it and i wouldnt put nothing on it you will prob irritate it more.

  8. My dog had the same problem I bought a product called Pro Pet skin and coat care formula at Walmart. The hair was thinning because of the scratching and red. It worked and her hair grew back.Good Luck!

Here is a site if you want to check what it says about it but I got it at Walmart for like $4.00

  9. Take him to the vet.

  10. Does he also l**k and chew on his paws? Look in his ears, are they pink, reddened, or swollen looking?

Has there been any change in diet since before he started doing this?

I would personally go back over him very good, use a flea comb and check. Fleas tend to want to gather at the tail base, it is common for Beagles to be hyperensitive to flea bites.

Depending on what you find, is what determine what I'd reccomend to give him for relief.

  11. It could be inflamed from him chewing on his tail because he's teething! BUT if it is fleas, cortisone won't help. You need to see a vet and determine the cause to get it "fixed."
