As I read these questions and answers from various ages. It really makes me wonder just exactly where are some of these people getting there education? The spelling is horrible, not to mention the wording period. It amazes me. It is probably due to text messages, but still people should try to better themselves. This maybe harder for the younger people. Its sad. What are your thoughts?

  1. I teach third grade and I have to say, there is a wide range of writers in that age group.  I have students barely writing sentences, more so getting the spelling correct.  I also have students that can fill a page with complete thoughts.  I can't really say if the lower students are like this due to texting or other medias.  For the most part, third graders don't really text or instant message others.

Teaching a child to write is tricky business.  For one you don't want to overwhelm the child with every spelling error, grammar, format, etc.  At the same time you want the child to learn to write properly.

I feel the key is to get the child to be interested in writing.  If it means bad grammar or texting acronyms, then it is a start.  The whole intent of writing is to communicate your ideas to an audience in the form of written language.

  2. If you're worried about everyone else's education, and spelling, check your own first. I usually don't complain about the spelling of others, especially since I know how I end up with some of my own, when trying to type, and the computer skips words. But if you're complaining about other people's spelling mistakes, then at least make sure that you're spelling is 100% correct. In your sentence  ".... getting there education?" you should have written t-h-e-i-r (possessive of they) and not t-h-e-r-e (sense of direction). I guess they get their education in the same place that you got yours.

    An English teacher

  3. I am not a teacher, but I do think this grammar is appalling. I do make grammar mistakes sometimes, but I do try my best to always spell correctly and use appropriate and correct grammar. Some naive youngsters might think this is "nerdy" or "dorky". But these are just examples that prove that some youngsters are very naive and unwise. It is sad really.

But the askers grammar isn't very good either. E.g- getting there education. He should have used their (possessive).

I do thank everyone out there that try their best in spelling correctly and use proper grammar.

    Thank you

  4. When you have people coming from all walks of life, and speaking all different  languages it is difficult to teach people correctly.  quit judging people just because you can.  What comes around goes around

  5. sweep around your own front door! "there" should be "their"

  6. Sometimes, I pity us teachers. We get blamed if students don't do well... now we are getting blamed for netizens' grammar?? haha what a joke...

I guess we need to know that the objective of education is after all to develop character.

    Hmmmmm

  7. "People living in glass houses shouldn't throw stones".

It's an old expression that applies those who are critical of others, while making similar mistakes themselves.

While your English grammar and punctuation is certainly better than that of many who write here, it is by no means perfect. There are at least 6 errors I can see, and I am not a teacher.

English is probably your first language, but this is an international 'arena'. English is taught in many countries by non 'native' English speakers and unqualified teachers.

At 'home', far less attention is paid to grammar, spelling and punctuation, even in 'English' speaking countries including the USA and Britain itself. Too much reliance is placed on 'artificial' methods such as spelling and grammar checkers which means that students are not taught the derivation and meaning of words and phrases.

Computers and mobile phones have brought a lot of benefits to society, but Email and SMS (texting) are also responsible for a lot of damage caused to the English language and the way young people express themselves.
