A question for all of you chicken owners?

can chickens be affectionate? or are they all grouchy, and peck at anyone no matter if it is the person that feeds them??

Single, hand raised chickens are friendly.  It also depends on the breed of the chicken.

Pecking you is a form of affection.  If you have hybrid egg layers they may be grouchy.  Not much fun, the life of a chicken, unless they have lots of fresh vegies to eat and toys to play with.  Basketball is a favorite of mine.  Hahahaha.

I just found a gorgeous big hen yesterday and she is the sweetest thing ever. She falls asleep when you pat her and has no problems with me picking her up and eating out of my hand. She doesnt peck at all but i cant tell you how she was raised as i dont know but i can tell you she has the most beautiful nature.

Yes, the only problem is they are a flock animal and it's almost impossible for all of them to remember and recognize you. But what I've found with my hens is you can single out one or two that have a unique personalilty or quirk (and they DO have individual personalilties) and give them a name (important, even if its simple and corny like chooky) so its easy to single them out. Talk to them when you are with them and make conversation like they're a person. they WILL remember you and look forward to you coming to see them.

  I don't know if I would call it being affectionate but they can certainly be tamed down considerably.

  I have hand raised ducks and chicks and though they may recognize me as their feeder they don't want me to handle them now as adult birds.

  NO,chickens don't peck out of affection.  They peck because they see something they think they can eat.  Shiny objects will draw their attention over dull things.

they will peck at anyone it is like if someone punched us humans  we say "ouch"
