I started my daughter on 1st foods. (Bananas & apples). I am feeding her bananas this week and then trying the apples next week just to see that she doesn't have an allergic reaction. My question is how long after I breast feed her should I feed her the food?

  1. Give her her fruit OR Veg first & then fill in the gaps with the milk.

You don't have to start Veg first. Breast milk is VERY sweet & it wont make a difference if you start fruit or Veg first.

I usually feed her all morning & then in the afternoon instead of her feeding I give her the veg or fruit. Then she has some milk. Every baby is different try different things & see what fits your baby best.

  2. Yes, 'can't tell' is correct, unless you are trying to wean her and hold she is. If you're just starting foods, I'm guessing that she's about six months?

If you are planning to continue full-time breast-feeding, then do not substitute a nursing session for solid foods. Don't let her get full from the solid foods either.

At this age, you are just really trying to give them exposure to new tastes, textures and experiences, and their main nutrition still needs to come from breast milk and/or formula.

Try offering her a few bites between feedings, especially at family meal times or when you are eating.

  3. I found a website last night that said half an hour to an hour after. I'll try and find it again.

I was always told solids after milk like you are doing. For those who are saying to give solids before milk... that is incorrect at this age. The milk is much more important for nutrition and especially when you are breastfeeding, you need to make sure bubs feeds or you may have issues with your supply. If you give solids first, they may fill up and therefore take less milk than they require

    Ok... found it.

Here's the direct quote and below is the link

Nurse your baby or offer formula bottles before solid foods. Offer solids from 1/2 hour to 1 hour after breast or bottle. Formula and/or Breast Milk are more important than solid foods when baby is starting solids!

Start solids in the morning or mid-afternoon! If your baby has any type of reaction, either allergic or with tummy troubles, you will have all day to deal with it.

Starting solids at bedtime runs the risk of disrupting baby's sleeping schedule as her body learns to digest the new foods!

    ANOTHER EDIT....

Check out the links on that site I just gave you... I really like all of the info it's very uselful

Here's a few more sites that I love... I know they aren't really related to your question but thought they might be useful

Also if it helps, here is our basic feeding schedule (times vary by up to an hour each side)

    7am... breast only

10:30am breast then nap (my daughter is not a good day time sleeper and by this stage is usually so tired so I put her straight down... she usually only sleeps for 20mins to 45mins)

solids when she wakes up... as much as she wants

2pm breast then nap... again solids when she wakes up

5:30pm breast, changedfor bed solids then bed

    hope that helps

  4. They say to start veggies first!

  5. Try out the solids at a time when you when you would normally breastfeed, so you know she is hungry. Since she is just starting out, she probably wont eat enough (or get enough in her stomach) to make her full, so you can breastfeed after the solids. As she becomes more accustomed to solid foods, you can begin to replace one nursing session with one feeding of fruit or veggies.

  6. I started subbing a nursing session for baby food.  So if she nursed every 3 hours, I would wait 3 hours and then feed her food.  Is that what you are asking?

  7. I was told to give her the food first and then finish her off with my breastmilk or a bottle of formula.  I haven't started actual foods yet, I am still on rice cereal with mine but thats how I have been doing it because the breastmilk or formula is still where she is getting all of her nutrition.

  8. Here's a rundown of our little schedule...BF at 7, food at 8, BF at 10, food at 11, BF at 1 and 3ish, food at 5, BF at 7:30 right before bed.  So usually about an hour before I feed him food I breastfeed him.  It just kind of worked out for us that way, and then our pediatrician said that was perfect, so whatever works for you and your baby is what is good.

    Good luck
