  1. I am not Canadian but I didn't know Canada had a queen.

There is no monarchy in Canada.

  2. I think its disgusting in this day and age that England still has a rule over seperate countries. Canada should be 100% Independent because with the Queen still in rule that isnt Independence. Soon the United Kingdom as we know it will be no more. The people of Scotland voted a Scottish National Party Government in May 2007. Our First Minister Alex Salmond is putting forward a Referendum for the people of Scotland to get the chance to vote for our Freedom.

Every country in the world that has Queen Elizabeth II as their queen :

    Australia

    Canada

    New Zealand

    Jamaica

    Barbados

    Bahamas

    Scotland

    Wales

    Northern Ireland

    Grenada

    Papua New Guinea

    Solomon Islands

    Tuvalu

    Saint Lucia

    Saint Vincent

All these countries should now in this day and age be given the right to rule their own country with full Independence from the British Monarchy.

The newest country in the world, Republic of Kosovo has a population of est. (2007) 1,900,000 and Scotland has a population of est. (2006) 5,116,900 and it is not an Independent country with the Scottish government having only limited rights to govern.

I believe in democracy and i know other people like me do too. I believe my country should now be free from British rule like every other.

  3. The Queen is merely a figurehead - she does not rule Canada.  We are part of the commonwealth - but her purpose to Canada is only ceremonial.  She can - if asked by our government to dissolve our parliament if there is a vote of non confidence as well signing papers by royal assent.  But she has no real influence or power in Canada.

  4. Most of the Queen's powers in Canada are exercised by the Governor General, at present Michaëlle Jean, though the monarch does hold several powers that are hers alone. The Governor General, who maintains direct contact with the monarch and serves as her federal representative, is sometimes referred to as Canada's de facto head of state.

The vast powers that belong to the Crown, collectively known as the Royal Prerogative, include many powers, such as the ability to make treaties and send ambassadors and include certain duties, such as defense the realm and to maintenance of the Queen's peace.

Parliamentary approval is not required for the exercise of the Royal Prerogative; moreover, the consent of the Crown must be obtained before either of the Houses of Parliament may even debate a bill affecting the sovereign's prerogatives or interests. It is important to note that the Royal Prerogative belongs to the Crown, and not to any of the ministers, though it may sometimes appear that way.

  5. The Queen rules nothing in our country.  She is a figurehead only.  Her power ended when we were no longer a part of the British Empire and became a part of the Commonwealth.

As a figurehead she has ceremonial power through her rep, the Governor General.  This ceremonial power is to appoint a government, call an election, deliver the speech from the throne.  The last power of the British Government over Canada...the overseeing power of the House of Lords over our courts...ended when we brought the Constitution home from Britain ( in 1987??).  If we wanted to opt out of the Commonwealth and not have the Queen as the ceremonial head of our government, we could do so unilaterally through the House of Commons.  Hope this helps.

  6. her rule in canada is very limited, perhaps only our hearts...

but to give you a better response than that she remains involved through our governor general as well as through our provincial leiutenant governors offices, they are how we can contact her if we want. she does posses huge influence in the house of commons should she choose to use it (she doesnt) because our government respectfully declared to honor her rule in canada forever.... thats why she remains our queen as well as other old colonies like australia.. it is a title more than a job afterall.

  7. The Queen picks the governor general off a list of possibles off a list compiled by the Prime Minister.  And the Prime Minister can phone her up for advise.  In theory she could veto laws call elections and a few other things but that power is left to the governor general and only used at the bid of elected politicians.

  8. I'm not Canadian either, but live nearby.  The Queen does not rule your country.  You have a democratic parliament to take care of the rules.

The Queen is merely a figurehead.  Her picture is on some of the money.  She sometimes tours in Canada.
