A question for firefighters .. and please .. only firefighters?

and hopefully ones in the union city/bay area

I have to do a report for my anthopology class where we interview five people from a culture. I wanted to do my report on firefighters because I hope to be one some day but my mom absolutely refuses to let me interview some firefighters because they won't give me the time of day because I'm not a "pretty girl" and maybe I'll just get one really nice one thats willing to help. She says that they're just uneducated young men with muscles, and I got a bit defensive. I admit, I'm not on the pretty side but I'm not hideous, its not like I have a foot growing out of the side of my face or anything of that sort.

so my question is, is what my mom is saying true?

I really don't believe her, but I also have some doubts.

The firefighters I've met were really nice people, and they really didn't seem like they would do that.

I think thats stupid.

and firefighters are just dumb young men!

they SAVE PEOPLES lives!

The have to be smart in all aspects!

Esp. when they are in a fire!

Your mom doesnt realize how much they risk their lives!

Uneducated my butt!! In my 21 years in the profession, I've probably got the same amount of time in a classroom as a doctor! Most firefighters, if they're not fighting fires, etc., are in a class or training to better themselves and to do the job without getting hurt.

Most firefighters are passionate about their job and love to talk about it. You wouldn't have any problem talking to them to find the info for your paper, no matter what you look like. Heck, I'm 40, grey hair and short. I'm far from the muscle bound "pretty boy" description you mom gave. But, I truly love what I do...Helping Others! Whether it's putting out a fire, cutting someone out of a car, tending to their injuries, teaching other firefighters or helping them with question about my job. I just love it all!

You would have no problem at all getting guys to interview for you........ Its an interview not a date.......your moms impression of firefighters is way off base,,,,,when you do interview 5 of them youll be surprised to find that several will be collegeeducated...and all of them will be fairly sharp individuals......just knock on the door of the local firehouse and ask
