Is there a pagan religion nowadays, in which the Sun is worshipped? Or a Sun God? If yes, what's it called, and could you give me some info about it?

thanks

  1. Yes there are. Existing polytheistic traditions and reconstructed polytheistic traditions do pay honor to the God or Goddess of the Sun.

Except remember the sun is not the one that is worshiped. It is the GOD or GODDESS behind the sun, the power, the anima that drives the sun that gets the reverence. If the sun has no anima or God behind it than it is not worthy of worship. It will just be a ball of hot helium undergoing fusion in the void of space.

Just as a side note .. many existing polytheistic traditions and reconstructed polytheistic tradition says exactly the same thing about the Earth. We pay reverence to the Goddess or the God of the Earth ..WE DO NOT PAY RESPECT TO A CLOD OF MUD OR ROCK OR EARTH .. that will just be silly. If the Earth has no Goddess or God behind it .. then it is not worthy of reverence.

The only thing worthy of reverence are the Gods. The Gods matter, not the Earth in absence of the Gods. Not the sun in absence of the Gods. Not the sea in absence of the Gods. Not the forest, not the seasons in the absence of the Gods. The Gods deserve our worship, not the matter They rule over.

Modern day suriving traditional religions that do revere the Gods behind the natural elements are Shintoism, the traditional Chinese religion, Hinduism and the religious belief throughout Indo-China.

Modern day reconstructed polytheistic religions that do revere the Gods behind the natural elements are Kemetism, Hellenismos, the Norse religion, Religio Romana, Semitic Recon, Celtic Recon and the various syncretic religions in between.

NeoWicca and Pantheism are interesting in that I can never really tell whether they revere the Gods behind Nature or do they just revere Nature. Some NeoWiccans definitely revere the Gods behind Nature, others I think revere Nature. Pantheist I am not too certain. Some Pantheist believe that Nature is inherently a God so they are revering the God that is Nature. Others seem to just revere Nature.

  2. I've seen something about Afro-Brasilian religions, where many pagan gods are worshipped, with offerings, sacrifices and ceremonies. It's a very lively paganism.

  3. I don't know of any specific religion that only worships the Sun... but you could always try looking into different religions and choosing to worship their Sun god/goddess. Like Apollo, for example...

  4. Yes there is.

Christianity is derived from the Ancient Egyptians.  The 'sun god' Horus became corrupted into the 'son of god' Jesus.

The Egyptians were also the first to come up with the idea of resurrection.

  5. Not that I am aware of. Most Pagan Theology is based on Earth God(desses) really. I always thought that was what differentiated them from Sun God religion.

  6. You could probably look into the Egyptian religion and Ra. Alternatively, I think Lucifer (no, not the devil) is a Sun God for the Romans (or Greeks, one of the two).

  7. answer: There are Sun gods and goddesses, and moon ones, storm, earth, etc.  Most pagans see the sun as more reflective of that deity's realm of influence, powers or such.  Like Apollo is a Sun god, he's also a god of art, inspiration, healing and beauty - all things the sun has been known to represent.

Most don't see the sun itself as a deity, if that's making sense.

Interesting side note: most cultures have a Sun god except Northern Europe and the Japanese - we have a Sun goddess.

  8. There are groups based on Nordic, Greco-Roman, Celtic, and Egyptian traditions, all of those have Solar Deities.  Some traditions address "Mother Earth and Father Sky", with the sun and rain being parts of the quickening which enable the Mother brings forth life.  Any good New Age or Game/Comic book store will usually have bulletin board with posting by which you can find your local Pagan groups, or you can look on line for groups in your area.  Without more information about the specifics of for what you're looking that's the best I can do.

  9. No, and there never really was very much sun worship

other than in a symbolic sense...
