Does anybody here who has a fear of flying feel that a crash IS imminent and WILL happen? As if they convince themselves their flight WILL be that one in a million?

I am due to fly in two days and genuinely feel as if I only have two days left to live. What a horrible way to feel, but, despite the overwhelmingly comforting statistics I feel quite uneasy. I haven't ever flown, so this is my first time. 11 Hours too.

  2. ok well when i first flew in an airplane i was FREAKED OUT. but before i left, my best friend told me to say a few prayers and take along some calming music. it worked for me. hope this helps!

  4. before getting on a plane to travel always take along a 100 ft. extension cord............cuz if the plane would happen to go down.....all you need to do is throw out the  cord.............it will snag and catch on to something everytime.!!!!

  5. Yeah, I have that when I fly, lol. It's just paranoia, of course. Heck, it even stopped me from getting on the plane once. But I've done it loads of times; you just have to keep yourself occupied and remember to breathe. And then once I get on the plane, I feel fine like "why the heck was I panicking in the first place?" because it feels like nothing.

  6. Yes, I fly across the country to visit my aunt every so often, and it scares me so bad, I always think the plane will crash.

  7. Take a pill of the benzodiazepine class. Seriously.

  8. i was scared till the first time i did now i have a private pilot license.

  9. I never have that fear until I am sitting in the seat. As soon as I sit down I have that fear that you are talking about, that I am living my last few minutes. This is all do to watching too many movies like final destination where they see it happening first. Your safe the airlines have to follow such strict safety guidelines. If you live in fear, you will never live.

  10. Dude....

chew some gum or something. The pilots that will fly you have spended their lifes to learn that.

  11. A lot of people are nervous about flying, especially in today's world.

It's normal to be fearful, especially since it is your first time...it's pretty nerve wracking being so high up without any personal control over the situation.

Keep in mind that it's safer to fly than to drive. Commercial pilots have spent YEARS training for their job, and there is always a co-pilot in the cockpit for that "just in case."

I'm reading the book "The Unthinkable: Who survives when disaster strikes, and why." It's really eye-opening. I found out that the majority of airplane crashes are survivable. The biggest thing is that you need to read the card that will be in the pouch in front of you about safety procedures and pay attention during the safety presentation. Figure out what emergency exit you would use, and count the rows of seats between you and that exit. Not only will this help put your mind at ease that you have your escape route planned out...but if, God forbid, something did happen, you would be able to respond properly.

Longer flights are nice because they provide entertainment, and that really helps to refocus your thoughts.

Have a nice time on your trip!

  12. Breath in, breath out...realize it's OK to feel this way and accept it...now that you've done that (keep breathing)...realize they are only thoughts in your mind...just thoughts and don't give them the power to give you all this anxiety.  Keep yourself calm (breath, meditate) and don't "go there" in your mind. I am a flight attendant and fly 4 days a week --8-10 legs. I have been doing this for years and I can assure you, you will be fine.   Live in the present--you are not even in the airplane and you are freakin out. It is horrible to feel that way SO STOP it!    I suggest you sleep on the plane (it'll be over before you know it)--bring your IPOD, listen to some soothing music, do a soduku puzzle.  Talk to your traveling companion.  You'lll be fine!!  I promise!  Take care!

  13. I am not afraid of flying but i haven't been on a plane in 2 years so ?

    Well Gd Luck !
