What is your policy for a child falling on the playground and not responding right away? If a child falls on the play equipment (on his/her back and doesn't respond right away) how do you react? Or what are you procedures?

  1. It depends what you mean by "he doesn't respond". Often children get a fright and go into shock. This is when they seem to be holding their breath. If its shock, they will seem pale and their skin clammy. If its shock, sit the child on your lap, do not give him anything and observe him until his parents get there.

If he seems unconscious after the fall, check vital signs, eg breathing, pulse and if he is bleeding in any way. Do not move him, and it's best to phone an ambulance - and his parents - to deal with this. If you move him, you could break his neck if he has fallen in an awkward position.  If you need to administer CPR, gently move him onto his back.

  2. my first reaction will be to call ambulance right away .

  3. phone parents take to hospital....

  4. You should always have a qualified first aider on the premises.  Do not move a child (or adult) who is unresponsive, until you know what the injuries are.  If the child has lost consiousness even for a few seconds they need to go to hospital.  Do not move the child if possible (unless to put in the recovery position) and call an ambulance, get another member of staff to phone the parents.  An accident report must be filled out. In the UK all accidents that need a hospital visit must be reported to RIDDOR.

  5. Call 911 and then the parents. Any fall that you land on your back and your not responding you need to go to the hospitol and DO NOT MOVE THE CHILD!!

  6. Sounds like a serious fall. Most schools have walkie-talkies out on the playground. Have playground duty call office with walkie-talkie and inform them to call 9-1-1. Even if child is O.K. or acting, it's better to be safe than sorry. If you find out child is O.K., have office cancel 9-1-1 call.

  7. If a child is non-responsive for any length of time, an ambulance is immediately called (use 911). After the ambulance is called, we make immediate efforts to contact the parents.

  8. Call parents and call 911. It is important not to move the child if he/she is not responding.
