  1. If you are driving the proper speed and your engine is at the right RPM, yes you can skip a gear upshifting.  Progressive shifting is always best.

If you are going downhill, you may just want to shift quicker.

Some makes just shift crappier than others... Eaton (Fuller) I find is better than Meritor...

  2. I did in a 9-spd, but with only 9 gears to work with it was a pretty large jump. It was harder to match engine speed to gear speed.

  3. Yes, without a load or an uphill, you can skip first.  Sometimes.

  4. You can skip gears in any truck transmission.  (Eaton-Fuller, Meritor,  Spicer, etc )

The whole trick to skipping gears is knowing when you can do it and when you can't.  If you are empty, you can skip gears on level or down grades by allowing the rpm to drop enough for the skip to take place.  You are basically shifting two gears, so you need to let the rpm fall far enough for two gears.  I have been known to do it on downhill on-ramps onto the interstate highway.  It makes life easier and you don't waste the fuel.

If you are loaded,  or climbing a hill, you will probably need to shift them all.

Patience is the key.  Don't get in a hurry to get the box into the next gear.  You need let the rpm drop enough to make up for the skipped gear, plus the one you are trying to shift into.  Obviously, you will not want to try this on an uphill grade, or when loaded.  You will roll to a stop before you get your next gear.

    Good luck
