Peace be unto you/As-Salaam Alaikum/Shalom Aleichem.

Greetings to you,

I hope that all is well with you today.

I wanted this question for women only because I was very curious about a feminine insight into this New Testament Scripture. I do know that all women of the Abrahamic faiths don't necessarily believe in the New Testament, but I wanted to know anyway what would a feminine insight be of this Scripture (John 20:16-17. Here is a link to it at BibleGateway.com: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%2020:16-17;&version=31; .)

My question was this, why do you think that Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me?" What do you think would make him say that?

Thank you very much in advance for your time in answering.

  1. Hold on loosely, but don't let goooo, if you cling too tightly, you're gonna lose controoool

  2. You have to see what was happening within the garden when Mary encounters Jesus, she was there during His death and had a hand in His burial. When she sees Him again it isn't until Christ calls her that she recognizes who He is. When Mary touched Him it was her way of verifying that what she was seeing was real. His telling her not to touch was tantamount to His saying "Don't be ridiculous, of course it is me, I am here in front of you"...

  3. I don't really understand why this is a female question for you ... there are some commentaries online:

from men obviously, and you'll find much more if you type the verse in google.

Sorry that I can't help with any special "feminine" insight.

Edit: I think throughout the NT you can find that Mary loved Jesus very much, and she'd use every possibility to just be around him, listen to him. She was probably just so happy to see him again that she didn't want to let go of him, but he had a greater task to accomplish. What I also thought about was that when Peter said to Jesus that he would surely not die, but stay with them, Jesus responded with very sharp words "depart from me, Satan". Now Mary is holding him back from something he believes he is called to do (ascending to heaven) but he doesn't use harsh words with her at all. He just says "stop clinging to me".

    ... just some thoughts ...

  4. Remember, Jesus Christ was not here to fulfill His will, but His Father in Heaven's. So though He had mortal desires, He did not want anymore temptations than needed is my best guess.

  5. Your post is worded so nicely, I wish I could answer :)

Unfortunately I can't, as I'm simply not familiar enough with that part of the Christian bible. I'm not aware that any woman from Judaism or Islam believes that the NT is inspired by G-d, because naturally, we adhere to the Torah and the Quran, respectively.

So I can't offer any answer, but thank you for such a kindly worded post, and Shalom to you also :)

    Muslim friends

    - apologies if I have misrepresented you, do correct me if I'm wrong and you do regard the NT as being divinely inspired :)

    TO THE ASKER

    My absolute pleasure :)

I look forward to more of your posts and will do my best to answer some of them!! :)

  6. Honestly if someone you loved died and then you saw them you'd be running to embrace them too just to see if they were real or not. This was probably an emotional moment for everyone. From what I've studied in the bible Mary Magdalin must have been a faithful follower of Jesus p.b.u.h she was the first one going to attend his "grave".
