Describe the function and apprance of the bunkhouse. Explain how the description of the bunkhouse contributes to the author's general portrayal of ranch hands as transient loners who are connected to nothing.

  1. The bunkhouse was a ramshackle small, dirty place with 8 straw beds, a card table in the middle with an apple crate at the foot to store belongings, & a can of bug spray on the floor.   It  housed migrant workers during the Great Depression, who were not expected to stay in any one place for long.  The spartan furnishings, living communally, & short stay would not induce anyone to feel welcome & comfortable.
