Why had Monseigneur taken his sister from a convent and married her off (below her social station) to a very rich Farmer-General? Did he do it for the money?

  1. The Monseigneur let the Farmer General marry his sister because the Farmer General wanted the Monseigneur's family name and the Monseigneur wanted the Farmer General's wealth. It was basically a trade-off between the two with no regard for the sister. Check out Sparknotes.com for chapter summaries.
