A quick look at the highlights of the 2012 PGA Tour season – Part 3
Before closing off a PGA Tour season, no one can forget to discuss the most famed golfer of this planet, Tiger Woods.
Everyone saw a bit of the old Tiger this season. He recorded three victories this year and competed strongly in three of the four major golf championships.
He made it to the final stage of the PGA Tour Playoffs and created a chance for himself to win the FedEx Cup with a win in the Tour Championship.
He started remembering how to smile and laugh on the golf course, and remained a good team member in the Ryder Cup.
At the same time, the world of golf witnessed him remain winless in the majors. He was frustrated and annoyed about being unable to overcome Brandt Snedeker and Rory McIlroy in the US PGA Tour Playoffs.
“I'm pleased at the way I was able to play at certain parts of [the most recent majors, the U.S. and British Opens] and at certain times, and obviously disappointed that I did not win,” Woods said of his performances in the major golf championships.
He added, “I was there at the U.S. Open after two days and I was right there with a chance at the British Open. Things have progressed, but still, not winning a major championship doesn't feel very good”.
During the 2012 PGA Tour season, he started hitting well off the tee. However, he still did not have control over the accuracy of his shots.
Most of the times, he was not able to put together four rounds, and it was all due to some mental blockage, which is still there inside him.
When players start getting older, they really need to be mentally stronger and fit in order to show their real self on the course.
Vijay Singh, one of the best players the game of golf has ever produced, showed his resurgence at times this year.
However, he failed to pull things up in his favour because of the mental grind to do it for complete four rounds.
Similar was the case with Woods. However, it was good to see that Tiger at least roared back this year and gave a hint of his plans to take his crown back in the times to come.
The time is not far away when the world of golf will witness another run by the legendary player.
However, the problem he will have to face is the presence of some other players, who have already threatened his position in the sport.
There was a time in 2001, when he used to move like a real tiger on the course. However, he now has some new challengers in front of him, who are ready to give him a tough time whenever he tries to contend in a tournament.
He was no doubt a favourite for this year’s Tour Championship because of his form on the tour. Still, there were players who were seeded higher than him for a victory.
By and large, most of Tiger’s game is still there with him. He only needs to get his putting touch back.
That can play a key role between coming close and earning a victory. His putting magic has not returned yet, and unless it does, he will only be winning one or two tournaments a year and nothing more than that.
