  1. Randonneuring is long-distance unsupported endurance cycling. This style of riding is non-competitive in nature, and self-sufficiency is paramount. Participation in randonneuring events is part of a long tradition that goes back to the beginning of the sport of cycling in France and Italy. Friendly camaraderie and perseverance are the hallmarks of randonneuring

You need a good bike shop quality bike and the experience and know how to keep it running.

  2. Oops, Bob, it appears you forgot to cite the source from where your answer was copied.  http://www.rusa.org/

Mischievous, if you go to that site, you'll get some good, all around info on randonneuring.

I suppose a randonneur could ride almost any type of bicycle, but traditionally they have several things in common:

    >>Geometry that agrees with long days/nights in the saddle (think "touring")

    >>Braze-ons ("mounts") for front/rear racks, fenders, and several water bottles

    >>Bags to mount both front and rear for carrying food & supplies

    >>Lighting systems, either battery- or dyno-powered

    >>The ability to mount suitable tires for travel off pavement

Here's a picture of a classic, decked out bicycle ready for randonneuring:

Rivendell (www.rivbike.com) makes the Atlantis, Bleriot, Saluki, and A. Homer Hilsen, all of which are suitable for this purpose.  There's a Rivendell owners group on Flickr; you can see the images of their fantastic bicycles here:

    That help??
