A really dumb question?

why is it called your thigh when your standing but called a lap when your sitting?

that is  a very good question... here's my shot at answering:

your thigh is a body part i.e flesh and bones.

however, your lap is what your thighs become when you sit down and are able to rest something one them.

Just because!!    English is a very funny language and there are lots of things that cannot be explained.  This is one of them.

Even when u r standing, it is called a thigh or referred 2 as thighs if u r mentioning both.

A lap is the cradle-like place where u can place a child. This is formed when u sit down & bring ur two thighs together.

U can place a lot of things in ur lap for example a lap top, a plate of food, a book etc etc.
