  1. What does "16 by 16 square feet" mean? Is it 16 sq feet or 256 sq feet? Also, your answer may depend on how big the spaces are between tiles.

Anyway, no matter what your area is, here's a tool to help you:

  2. 576

it takes 24 tiles to cover 16 feet in either direction so 24^2

  3. according to google,

    (16 * 16 * 12 * 12) / (8 * 8) = 576

alternatively, one could calculate the # on a side, and square, like:

    (16 * 12) / 8 = 24  on a side, and,

    ((16 * 12) / 8)^2 = 576

OR, at 8", there are 3 tiles in 2 feet, or 24 tiles in 16 feet, so

    24^2 = 576

  4. Its very simple

Divide the area of room (which is a square and not a rectangle btw) by the area of the tile.

Assume that the tiles will cover the entire surface of the floor.

Assume that the gap between the tiles is infintesimally small

Now the area of the room = A = 256 sq feet

Let area of the tile = T = 64 sq inch

U will have to convert the area of the room into sq inch

    12 inch = 1 feet

    Therefore

    16 feet = 192 inches

    A = 16 ft x 16 ft = 192 x 192 sq inches = 36864 sq inches

Divide A by T and u will get the the number of tiles reqd

    Number of tiles = 576
