A reflection on the 2012 PGA Tour season
The Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour 2012 season had its fair share of excitement. There was something or the other to talk about throughout the year.
The Tour kicked off in Hawaii where Steve Stricker played magnificent golfing rounds to clinch the title. He shed a few tears in the process.
Bubba Watson won his first major championship. He won the Masters Tournament. Watson displayed a flawless game throughout the course of the tournament and clinched the championship title.
Watson then went on to collaborate with his sponsors, Ping, to raise money for charity. Ping made 5000 pink coloured limited addition drivers.
Watson, from then on, used the driver in the following tournaments, and as a result, $250,000 was raised and donated to a hospital.
Webb Simpson stole the show when he won the second major championship of the year, the U.S. Open. The tournament was tightly contested by the top contenders, but Simpson was a determined man, and eventually went on to lift the trophy.
South African Ernie Els surprised everyone on the Tour and showed that he is still very much in his game.
Els, who has had a major role in promoting the sport in the country, won the Open Championship and silenced his critics by performing well at the highest level of golf.
The South African has had a disappointing run of form but after winning the major championship, he looks like a man on a mission.
Then there is the Northern Irishman, Rory McIlroy, who made the headlines wherever he went.
The current world number one works magic in any tournament he participates in. He has won numerous awards through the course of the season. McIlroy outplayed every golfer on the Tour during the 2012 season.
Tiger Woods is not that far behind the Top Golfer of the Year. The American golf professional won three titles on the Tour. Woods showed glimpses of the game that once made him the most dominating golfer on the tour.
There are many golfers who came into the limelight during the season and many were expected to perform well, but they failed.
