The other day my family and I were out to eat and my step sister gets her coke refill after about five minutes and when the waitress hands her the drink she says "thank god" in a very enthusiastic voice. Then her mother reprimands her for "blaspheming and using the lords name in vain". Is this really blasphemy? And can anyone give me some insight to where she is coming from because all she says is "it just is". Thanks in advance!

  1. Although I cannot answer this for you, I ask that you please place this in the "Religion" category. Placing this question in "Law & Ethics" will not help you nearly as much.

  2. There is a train of thought that says that using the name of God in a casual way is not showing the deity of the universe the proper respect due to his station.  The Hebrews did not use the name of God in their writings and so it is offensive to some to see how casually we here in Western nations use his name.
