A rich football fans letter to Arsene Wenger: Start spending
Dear Arsene Wenger,
You wallet, like the Arsenal trophy cabinet, is gathering dust. Saving is good, but you’ve proved to be nothing more than a miser during your time in charge of Arsenal. I get the feeling you were Shylock in your past life; you certainly embody all the traits perfectly.
When was the last time Arsenal made an expensive signing? I’m not entirely sure if you could answer that question either. It is your over dependency and blind faith on youngsters has been a major cause for the Gunners' demise in recent seasons.
The last time your side went on to win any silverware was the FA Cup in 2005. It has been six long years since then. I don’t think Arsenal deserve to enjoy a top Premier League side status anymore, finishing in the top three is just not good enough anymore.
Neither is playing attractive football and not getting any results at the end of the season. You have relied on economical young players far too much for far too long. It doesn’t take too long for the young players to grow older and realize the lack of ambition at the club.
This results in their departure to other club, with Gael Clichy being the latest player to demand a move away. Having joined Arsenal in 2003, Clichy has not won any major trophies with the London side and is now looking for a move away in the summer transfer window.
He seems to have apparently identified Liverpool as a club he would like to move to. How embarrassing, considering the fact that the last trophy Liverpool won was also the FA Cup, just a year after you did. However, Clichy has every right to consider http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 a club with greater prospects, seeing as how the Reds have been busy in the transfer windows.
Not spending in the transfer window on new signings is one thing and increasing the existing players’ wages in another. You don’t believe in either. One of the most recent examples of this was the departure of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429’s refusal to extend his contract with improved wages.
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 international revealed he had never wanted to leave but was forced to do so because of Wenger’s refusal to offer him a new contract. He said in an interview: “Arsenal are in my heart and they will be in my heart forever. I will always be an Arsenal fan and leaving was not easy.”
Have you learnt nothing from the other English Premier League sides, such as Manchester United, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786, Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur? The aforementioned sides have proved that spending is as important, if not more, than recruiting young talent.
