okay so let's say you buy the spanish one....so people claim that rosetta stone is the best way to learn a language. How long does it honestly take to actually become fluent in spanish....i mean fluent as in talking to a spanish speaker and they would have never thought you didn't speak it.

  3. Hello,

You won't become fluent by Rosetta stone. On the average it takes about 6 months to hear and give basic back some basic understandable conversation, 3 years before you a pretty darn good and seven years or more before you can understand figures of speech, plays on words, pass high school or university exams and defend yourself in a court of law.

  4. I bought the 1,2,3 levels for French Rosetta Stone and I'd say it would take at least 6 months to finish if you worked on it consistently and with effort. Rosetta Stone can't make you fluent but it can make you proficient enough to properly converse with someone else. After Rosetta Stone, I'd recommend a half a year to a year's of studying. There's no easy process in becoming fluent in another language.

  5. First off...you REALLY have to be in to wanting to learn a new language. A half-hearted effort will make things tougher.

Rosetta Stone's method of teaching is through repetition and linking words to pictures. You will have a good grasp of the language depending on how much effort you put into it. This program also teaches you the pronunciation of the words but it will be up to you to pick up an authentic accent, or rather, one that doesn't sound like c**p.

However, the most surefire way to becoming fluent, in my opinion and experience, is to live in the country itself. I lived in France for a month and when I left I could carry a basic conversation. My father lived in France when he was a teen for like 6 months and became completely fluent. What happens is, when you live among foreign people, it often seems like their speaking 100 times faster than you could possibly keep up. Just keep on listening and I don't know how it happens but your brain eventually starts re-organizing itself and you are able to understand what they are saying, the words sound a lot different but you are able to just know the meaning.

As an added bonus, you are able to pick-up on an accent that doesn't horribly butcher the beautiful language, as all Latin based languages (French, Italian and Spanish) are indeed pleasant to listen to, especially from women.

I am assuming you are relatively young, so, if your high school offers it, enter a foreign exchange student program to the country of your choice (Spain in your case). You are young enough for your brain to still be in information sponge mode so you can assimilate things rather easily if constantly exposed to it. When you return stateside you will probably speak circles around your Spanish teacher, with full flow and accent of the language.
