Question:

A scared cat. . .What do I do

A couple of months ago, a stray kitten came up on our back porch and started eating out of my cat's food. We started feeding the kitten and he now has a shelter, place to play (big yard and a playhouse he loves to climb on like a monkey) and food. He will only come in contact with one person. Which is my grandfather. I've been very calm with him and I don't pressure him like I am trying to trap him. I've went outside every day for the past few days and he still is afraid of me and everyone else. What do I do?

  1. make sure whenever he eats the food is near you.  bring the food closer and closer to you until he is eating out of your hand.

Cats need to be bribed with food, have no startaling movement, and dont try to grab him and pick him up when he gets close you you. Slowly hold out your fingers so he can sniff em.. dont even try to pet him until you have done this for a few days.

  2. The Bribing thing works.  Try some cooked chicken ... throw it to it and then wait.

You will HAVE to be patient if you want to win this kitten.

the other way is to trap it and take it in the house and then you only feed/ water and try to hold it...

I would take it to the vet and have it spayed / neutered or you are going to have SEVERAL kittens to feed.. all of which will be wild.

  3. Is your grandfather the one who feeds him?  If so, that's why.  They always know where the food comes from!  Maybe your grandpa reminds the cat of the previous owner.

  4. if u don't feed him and he is not used to people, he's not going to come to u. I had a similar experience. when I started feeding the strays, they learned to like me as well. Make sure that the kitten isn't sick or belongs to a another owner.

  5. It'll take a lot of patience and being quiet.  Sit where your grandfather feeds him next to the food.  Get him used to you slowly.  He may never come around, but with soft voice and lots of patients and positive reinforcement he just might.

  6. leave the kitten alone. he will come when trust has been built. he was treated badly before. fear is necessary to survive and that's why he's still alive. take the time to build trust on his conditions, however long it takes or if it ever happens. and good for you for caring for one of God's creatures.

  7. I have had this happen a couple of times and after awhile the cat will not be scared of you, it will take a couple of months or so, but if he is like the stray one I have, when I go out now to feed him he is all over me and just wants some petting. Good luck
