A school year in california?

Question

im from canada and i would really like to stay in california with my parents friends for my grade 11 school year.

do i need a citizenship or because im a student i dont need one?

will it affect my school work?

i need some information

As far as I know the California school systems are still on a "don't ask" policy concerning citizenship.  They figure that whether you're a legal immigrant or not you deserve an education.
