A serious but possibly obvious running question?

How much does running in heat and humidity affect running? I ran in 83 degree weather with 70 humidity and it was absolutely terrible! I usually can run 4 miles with little problem but today I could only run a mile or so and I couldn't push anymore. (I went on and off after the mile and a half, but for very short distances.) Does heat really affect your running performance that much? Or am I just a frickin wus? lol

  1. yea just drink alot of water before thats when it is important so ur hydrated but yea it effects it

  2. i had the same exact problem as you yesterday.

i went out for a 40 minute run and after about 10 minutes i felt like just quitting right there. for real. it was about the same weather conditions too. the rest of the da i felt sick to my stomach too. so i think the weaher conditions play a huge role in your running performance!!

  3. it definitely affects you quite a bit.

here are some things i do to make the heat more bearable:

-wear a really light sleeveless shirt, not cotton

-stay really hydrated. drink even when ur not thirsty

-go running in the morning or evening, not in the afternoon

-run in shady areas like through the forest

  4. The humidity makes it feel way hotter to your body. Exercising in too hot or humid weather can cause heat stress or heat stroke. Both serious conditions that can effect anyone, even athletes. (I am a certified lifeguard, I understand and know how to treat both).

Go to http://www.srh.noaa.gov/lch/jamb/hichart... to see a heat and humidity chart that tells you when your at risk for heat stress, and when you shouldn´t exercise!
