The new ship Titanic II is sailing on her maiden voyage. As luck woul have it, she strikes an iceberg. The leak created is taking in water at a rate of 3.25 tons every 12 minutes. The ship is 40 miles from the nearest land. The captain knows that the ship will sink if it takes in 68 tons of water. The pumps of the ship can throw out 12 tons of water every hour. With this damage, the ship can travel at 2.25 miles per hour. Will the Titanic II sink before it reaches shore? if it does sink, how far from shore will it sink?

  1. This is a math question, not a transportation question. You should move it to the appropriate board.

  2. Abandon Ship!!!! Everyone for themselves! Save the Beer!

  3. With the pumps in operation and the steady rate of water coming onboard, there is a net gain of 4.25 tons of water per hour.

At 2.25 mph, it will take 17.77 hours to reach land.

At 4.25 tons of water per hour (net), the ship will sink in 16 hours at approximately 3.825 miles from shore.

(Personally, i'd get people down in the hull bucketing out water....  Why waste the labor of 2000 motivated people??  They should definitely be able to make up the difference.  And even if they can't, you can throw enough ballast overboard to make up the tonnage difference.)

  4. It's taking on water at 16.25 tons per hour. so every hour there is 4.25 tons of water left. in 13 3/4 hours it's up to the 68 tons required to sink it. 40 miles off shore making a headway of 2.25 miles per hour times 13 .45 = 30.26.  10 miles off shore it sinks. you wont it in minures and seconds, plus miles feet and inches, I can give you this also if I work on it long enough.
