I find it amusing how people are sometimes unable to answer a simple hypothetical question. Therefore, here is a simple hypothetical.

You are in a plane flying at 36000 feet. The pilots have suddenly lost control and the plane is going to crash. If you jump off the plane you have a 40% chance of dying. If you remain in the plane you have a 60% chance of dying.

Would you endure the fear of falling 36000 feet to better your odds, or would you remain in the plane?

  1. Given that this question is purely hypothetical, and therefore the problems of extremely cold temperature, lack of oxygen, exiting the aircraft, etc. have been somehow accounted for to derive the 40% chance of dying (or can be ignored), and the odds for survival still favor jumping, my choice would be to jump.

  2. most people would remain frozen and not be able to process any odds, let alone which might be the better..falling in air versus feet on whatappears to be solid...I would choose the latter and stay in the plane

  3. Fine, now I refuse to fly!

  4. I think that the free-fall experience insode a plane would be worse than outside, simply because you are falling faster than you would be... so in terms of comfort level, I would jump my *** out.

either way, you are falling from 36000 feet, and inside the plane would be much worse... ugh, i cant imagine.

  5. of course this is a hypothetical question, because there is no way to have a 40% chance of dying at 36000 feet, unless you have a parachute, which you did not mention. Regardless of the percentages for death or survival, I would jump out, just to experience the sensation of free falling.

  6. First: there's no way for you to get out of the aircraft at FL360. The cabin is pressurized and you can't open doors or windows.

Second: as others have pointed out, you would perish at that altitude without oxygen equipment that can provide 100% O2 under pressure. How do you figure only a 40% chance of dying?

Think about it this way: if you were about to hit something in your car while travelling 75 MPH, would you elect to jump out? Or would you feel a bit safer having all that crushable metal protection around you?

  7. 36000 feet you would be frozen solid almost instantly....

  8. I have always had this deep desire to be a bird so I would JUMP and become FREE BIRD.

  9. What amuses me is when people sit around thinking of ridiculous hypothetical questions to ask that lack any basis of common sense. Why ask something like this in the first place?

Hypothetically though, I'd jump out at about 8,000 feet, since you didn't limit my departure time.
