  1. I have been doing commercial embroidery part-time for 16 years. There really isn't a correct answer to your question. this depends on what you sell and what your markup is. Obviously, I make more money on a jacket than a t-shirt so it really depends on what you charge and if you can get the business to support the payments. You won't sell many jackets in June! Nor will you sell many t-shirts in October! Personally, 2008 is heading towards my worst year ever thanks to the crappy economy. Luckily I do this part-time and have a full-time job so it isn't a big deal to me since I have a steady income. I would suggest keeping your full-time job (if you have one) until the business can support you if you decide to get one.

Keep in mind there are a lot of expenses running a small business. Advertising, office supplies, phone line, thread, backing, needles, and other embroidery supplies. (Most embroidery manufacturers will tell you to buy a computer to use only for the embroidery.) If you plan on shipping stuff, you will need boxes, tape, labels, printer, etc. You should also have a tech come by once a year and maintain it, but all of these expenses can add up quickly.

If I did it full-time, It would not match my full-time job salary unless I had 3 machines at 40 hours a week.

  2. That depends on the amount of customers, how much you charge for your time, and the number of hours you wish to spend doing the work.

The people I buy machine embroideried items from does all their design work on computer then sends the design to the machine.

They store our custom designed items for the next time we get ready to order more merchandise.
