The word is "knackered", and it derives from the noun "knacker", someone whose trade was to render (destroy and butcher) old working horses that were too worn out for further use and whose carcasses would be unfit for human consumption. From this, the word has been extended (a very natural process in English) to other instances of objects or people that are "worn out" or "tired".

    You can still hear the original use in expressions such as "only fit for the knacker's yard" (abattoir).
