  1. Which means they won't give you any health insurance or paid vacation or sick time.

  2. Ask a few questions.

First do they expect you to drive their truck or yours? Theirs - usually means you're an "employee" not a contractor.

Second will they expect you to work a set schedule? If so you are an "employee"

Third are they paying you by the hour? If so you are an employee.

Forth can you drive for other companies too or do they expect you to drive only for them? If not you are an employee.

Fifth will he be providing maintenance, insurance, registrations and fuel for your truck? If so you are an "employee"

Now if you do actually qualify as a contractor (self employed) you will be responsible for ALL of your taxes - hire an accountant. You will need to keep back about 1/4 of your earnings to pay your taxes, and you will have to cut a check and file quarterly. You will need to keep ALL your expense receipts for deductions on your taxes. AGAIN hire an attorney that specializes in filing taxes for small businesses. Also make sure he files with the IRS your earnings. If he won't you both may be breaking the law.

They probably want to have you as an independent contractor to dodge paying payroll taxes.

  3. if you have to be self employed, they are not hiring you. they don;t want to pay payroll taxes or health benefits and depending on what exactly you would be doing - they may be treating you as an outside contractor illegally - whatever they offer - ask for 50% more to cover your taxes and health insurance and see what they say (if what they offer i even a reasonable amount per hr), then get a contract guaranteeing it for X period of time  - IF you want to do it that way - they also would not be paying into the unemployment system on your behalf, so when the assignment ends, you would NOT be able to collect unemployment benefits - add another 20% for that
