  1. You should probably start out with a small plot. The ground will need to be broken up 6 - 8 inches deep.  A shovel could be used, but a rototiller is easier and better, or perhaps if you live in a rural region (Southern California does still have that, right?!!), you might find a farmer to do it.  Anyway, after the soil is ready, sprinkle some fertilizer over it, smooth it with a rake, make rows, plant seeds, then sit back and wait.  Pay attention to need to water and to spray for bugs, etc.

Easy vegetables to grow:  radishes, lettuce, tomatoes, squash, peppers, eggplant, bush beans.

You may want to get your soil tested sometime, but I wouldn't worry about that at first.  So. California should have good enough soil, but you'll probably have to water your garden, and you may find that expensive or even prohibited where you live.

    Good luck!

  2. I planted my first veggie garden this year and am loving it

You just need a space to till the dirt that will get sun. Till your dirt, get the weeds out and mix in some fertilizer. Then just plant your seed or baby plants. If you are doing tomato's I recommend buying the cages that go around them. It helps hold the vines up as they get big. You will need to water every day. If you get bugs on them, buy seven dust. You can use it on veggies and it will kill the bugs. Good luck.................

  3. Answer from a So Cali resident gardener:  Your right vegy's and fruit do very well here.  Depending on where you live as long as it's not somewhere deep in the valley you should have no problem.  If you planning on gardening in an area that looks like it hasn't been touched in a while or has been touched in a while you need to buy Amend at least one bag for every two square feet.  Tomato's are very easy just need to buy cages, squash you plant and forget just water, zucinni does well, pumpkins, strawberry's, really any thing your heart desires.  Feel free to contact me if you would like more information just provide a picture and I can let you know what will be easy.
