The well is 20 feet deep. Every day the snail climbs up 3 feet and every night slips back 2 feet. How many days will it take him to get out of the well?

  1. Just remember, the day he finally gets to the top, he won't slip back down that night--he'll be gone, eating lettuce in someone's garden.

  2. 18 days.  At start of 18th day snail starts out at 17 feet.  At end of 18th day snail climbs its 3 feet and its out.

  3. 1 night= 1 ft

    2nd night= 2 ft

    3rd night= 3 ft

With this info we dont need to calculate anymore because know we  know for this situation, the day number is how many ft so 20 days

    OR

you could work out with first fact. 1 day is 1 ft so divide  20 by 1.

  4. If I did this correctly, basically he only climbs 1 foot a day since he climbs 3 but then falls 2, leaving only 1 foot actually climbed. So it would take 20 days to climb out of the 20-foot deep well.

  5. He/she, remembering the hermaphrodite status, gains one foot in 24 hors, therefore 20 days to reach the top

  6. 18 days since he's essentially climbing at 1 ft/day. on the 18th day he goes 3 feet and he's free. YAY

  7. 18 days. Here is an illustration of how it works:

    Day1. 0 + 3 - 2 = 1

    Day2. 1 + 3 - 2 = 2

    Day3. 2 + 3 - 2 = 3

    Day4. 3 + 3 - 2 = 4

    Day5. 4 + 3 - 2 = 5

    Day6. 5 + 3 - 2 = 6

    Day7. 6 + 3 - 2 = 7

    Day8. 7 + 3 - 2 = 8

    Day9. 8 + 3 - 2 = 9

    Day10. 9 + 3 - 2 = 10

    Day11. 10 + 3 - 2 = 11

    Day12. 11 + 3 - 2 = 12

    Day13. 12 + 3 - 2 = 13

    Day14. 13 + 3 - 2 = 14

    Day15. 14 + 3 - 2 = 15

    Day16. 15 + 3 - 2 = 16

    Day17. 16 + 3 - 2 = 17

    Day18. 17 + 3 = 20 *

He's out on the 18th day. Because once he reaches 20, he won't slip back anymore!

  8. it seems like it would be 20, but wouldn't it be 19? because if he climbs 3 feet everyday but at night loses 2 of those, on the 19th day he would be 1 foot away from the top, and the 3 feet he would move would make him be out of the well. but idk. its either that or 20 haha.oh wait...it would be 18 because he would be able to make it all the way then haha.

  9. 18
