A special Spanish Open for Spaniards
Spaniards are planning to display their best performance at the Spanish Open that will be making its 100th anniversary in the coming week.
Established in 1912, the Spanish Open is staged by the European Tour. It will celebrate its 100 years from May 3 to 6, at the Real Club de Golf de Sevilla in Seville, Spain.
On the other hand, there is also the first death anniversary of the Spanish legend, Seve Ballesteros in the coming week.
All the players look motivated to do their best in their homeland.
The official purse of the event is €2,000,000. The field is set and the 2012th edition is about to start. In order to conduct two occasions, officials are expanding the scope of the tournament.
Most of the famous Spanish players like Alberto Fernandez, Ignacio Garrido, Xavi Puig, Carl Suneson, Alvaro Quiros, Jose Maria Olazabal, Pablo Larrazabal, Antonio Hortal, Pablo Martin, Alvaro Velasco, Carlos Del Moral, Rafael Cabrera-Bello, Gonzalo Fdez-Castaño
and Miguel Angel Jiménez will be putting their skills to test at the Spanish Open.
Most of the Spaniards desire to keep the tournament's 100th edition within the country. On the other hand, the international players will also try to win the tournament and take the trophy to their homeland.
“The Spanish Open is very special to us Spanish players,” Jimenez said. “It is a big week and of course we will all have thoughts about Seve and how we miss him”.
Ballesteros died last year due to brain cancer. He started his professional golf career in 1974 and died at an age of 54.
He recorded 91 professional wins. Out of which, 50 triumphs were recorded on the European Tour, 9 on the PGA Tour, 6 on the Japan Golf Tour and 31 victories on other tours.
“Seve and Jose Maria are the reason I play golf,” Rafael said. “They were my idols when I was young and they still are. Spanish golf is on a high at the moment with Sergio Garcia winning twice at the end of last year, Alvaro Quiros winning twice in Dubai
last season and me winning this year”.
There are ample chances for the Spanish professionals to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the tournament and 1st death anniversary of Ballesteros by recording a win.
