A special encounter of unknown odds: Texas Rangers vs. St. Louis Cardinals
The Texas Rangers and the St. Louis Cardinals may be meeting each other in the World Series for the first time but beyond that, they have just played three games against each other in history. Practically no one knows much about who is stronger against the
other. Michael Young, the longest capped Texas player on the roster has had some experience but that was a long time ago. The Rangers spoke of the odds on Monday, October 17, from the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
Young has faced Chris Carpenter before and that has been a distant memory for the unofficial team leader. Of those games in the distant past, the designated hitter remembered the ace pitcher in one game.
"I think [Cardinals ace Chris] Carpenter pitched one of those games, but other than that, I don't know," Michael Young said. "It's a long time ago, man."
The Rangers and the Cardinals do not even meet in the Spring Training games as the American League Champions play their games in Arizona, while the National League Champions play their share in Florida.
Texas Outfielder David Murphy however had a different take on the situation.
"I'm not really thinking anything," Murphy said. "I'm thinking about the World Series and our side of it. Whatever we need to do to win. I'm the type of person that likes to simplify things. You look at the three parts of the game -- pitching, offense and
defence - and I like where our team is at in all of those areas."
The aim is to pitch right and hit hard, no matter whom the opponent is and the Rangers are not fazed by the lack of experience against the Cards. The one thing that Manager Ron Washington will be hoping for on Wednesday, October 19, is that his team picks
up a critical Game 1 victory through C. J. Wilson.
The Cardinals have a strong pitching to their name and the only man with the most At-Bats against those players is none other than Michael Young. It will be interesting to see how the World Series pans out.
