Just a quick question on how to calculate the five figure summary of the total prize money received from the following statement:

The following table shows the total prize money received in 2007 to date for each of the 31 seeded male players at this year's wimbledon. the amounts shown are to the nearest US$100,000.

What is the five figure summary of the total prize money recieved?

  1. First write the data in numerical order:

      2  2  2  3  3  3  3  3  3  3  4  4  4  4  4  4  5  5  6  6  6  7  7  7  7

      7  8  9 16 27 33

    Minimum = 2

    Maximum = 33

    Median = middle value (i.e. 16th value) = 4

    Lower Quartile = median of lower half of data (i.e. 8th value) = 3

    Upper Quartile = median of upper half of data (i.e. 24th value) = 7

    The five figure summary is then those five numbers in order (min, LQ, median, UQ,max)

    i.e.

    (2,3,4,7,33)
