  1. they're called horse hairs...

    or bow hair..

(from the tail of a horse.)

but its fine.  if you practice more than 30 minutes daily 5 times a week, you should get your bow rehaired once a year.

  2. No, bow hair comes out occasionally.  You won't need to get the bow reharied unless a lot of the hair comes out, or the bow hair is slick and doesn't play well any more.

  3. Don't worry about it.  They break and fall out from time to time.  There are lots of them.

  4. No, just pull it out gently so you don't tempt the others to be pulled out as well.  I hate it when that happens.  I especially hate it when a string pops in your face.

  5. If a lot of hair comes out of the bow. 20% or more, have the bow re haired.

As a busy violinist I have mine re haired once a year. I would not ever let it go more than 2 years. Even though the hairs do not break, they loose their ability to hold rosin and to give you a good sound.

You will break strings on the violin and you may need work done on it from time to time. Look for a violin shop now, so that you know where to take it when something happens.

  6. No, it's fine. They tend to break off every now and again. Just take a pair of nail clippers and trim it off right where it goes into the bow. No big deal, just make sure that if they start really breaking that you get your bow rehaired.
