Question:

A stupid chest pain problem?

Hello. I am typing this at 11:12 at night, because of the titular annoyance of this question.

To go into specifics, the pain seems to originate from the left side of my chest (suspiciously near where my heart is, eep!). I have also been hurting in my left shoulder, neck, and lower jaw. Inhaling has seemed to deminish the pain (Though of course I have to exhale at some point!) This is not the first time such a pain has occured before, obviously implying that it does subside, but only after an hour or something.

Before you say 'Go see a doctor', I decided not to waste my parent's time and money, at least not yet. I'll see if someone can help me understand this thing without asking for anything more than two (possibly 10) points.

On a similar question to this, someone mentioned something about the 'intercostal nerve', but I was hoping someone could verify this and/or give me some additional information.

  1. Most chest pain, while very worrisome, is benign. In the chest, there is a large bundle of organs, connective tissue, and nerves in a very small area of the body. Damage, injury, strain, or pain of the muscles, major organs or nerves can cause you to feel pain in the chest. Also, anxiety or panic attacks can cause non-lethal chest pain. However, a few things I would like you to consider: the classic symptoms (there are too many rare/abnormal to list) of a heart attack are pains in the left side of the chest that radiates to the left side of the body (i.e. jaw, neck, shoulder, or arm). Most patients who are on the edge of an imminent heart attack also reported beforehand that the chest pain gets worse with exertion (i.e. walking, running, climbing stairs) and may experience shortness of breath, cold clammy skin, and/or sweating.

  2. It sounds like stress. it's possible you have a bone out of place that is jabbing you. A chiropractor can fix that. When stress starts affecting your breathing it's time to let somebody take care of you. And look at your life. When I used to be a kid facing summer camp alone, or when I used to work and go to college I had chest pains every day like I was going to have a heart attack. Now that I'm a stay at home mom I never have chest pains. A lot of muscle pain in the neck, jaw and shoulder is caused by or made worse by prolonged computer usage. Get up and dance!

  3. You didn't say your age, but it's impossible to know what's wrong with you. Even if it has nothing to do with your heart, it's surely worth seeing a physician.
