Question:

A surprise party?

I'm planning a surprise anniversary party for my parents. What are some creative ways to get them to show up on time and dressed appropriately?

Also, should I send invitations to close friends and family whose homes my parent frequently visit, and might see an invitation laying out. Should I just tell those people word of mouth? Or is that tacky?

  1. We had a surprise 70th birthday party for my mother in law last year.  My husband took them to lunch before the party, then used an excuse to stop at the church -- which is where we had the party.

Family members checked address books, email addresses, phone numbers, etc. and I contacted her friends, former classmates, former co-workers and bosses, former neighbors, family from across the country and sent invitations.  Family and friends who could not attend sent cards to our home address and we presented them to her at the party.

We got a picture of her walking into the fellowship hall at church -- Priceless!

Best wishes for your party, and congratulations to your parents.

  2. Maybe the close friends you are inviting could help you get your parents to the event with your parents knowing? If the party is at a restaurant, the close friends could pretend to take your parents out to dinner so that they are getting them there on time.

Sending invitations to close friends is a good idea, but maybe you could telephone or send an email--both done tastefully.
