A tale of moustaches in International cricket (Part I)
The Ashes have become so boring that no one is interested in the play instead everybody has been talking about the moustaches that have suddenly popped out of nowhere.
November was renamed as Movember in the honour of all the facial hair that had grown left right and centre. In Greek mythology, there exists an army of “dandy-like” moustached people whose strength was their lovely, shiny locks on their face.
In today’s world, winning a Test match is a Herculean task in itself. Cricket has always been known as the “gentleman’s sport” and in true sense the men’s prestige lies in their moustaches. These gentlemen have taken up the task of growing facial hair, whether they are making it a style statement or no statement at all.
Kevin Pietersen, who went on to make a double century during England’s first innings in the second Test match against the Aussies, was the trend-setter last month. He unveiled his “new look” on his favourite social medium, Twitter. The picture was taken in a hotel bathroom and he had a huge grin on his face, also showing off his white teeth. But one thing stood out, the unshaven hair above his lips. It looked as if a 5-year-old girl has criss-crossed with a black marker on her Kevin Pietersen doll. Yet as the month progressed and along with the Ashes hype, Mr. Ego’s (as called by Shane Warne) moustache grew on as well.
The man known for his arrogance and his flamboyant ways in England cricket however, showed a new side of him, quite literally. He reckoned that the moustache made him more sophisticated as he took inspiration from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120 Gable’s look in Gone with the Wind but he did this to support some British charity for spreading awareness about cancer among men. He signed up with the foundation to grow a moustache in the month of November.
The batsman was already under-fire on his ramblings against everyone related to the English Cricket Board. He was being criticised for his form and a lack-lustre year in cricket and England were banking on the coveted moustache to deliver. He played fairly well during the warm up matches and silenced the critics with his double whammy.
While he was struggling with cramps, the wannabe actor/model was quick to celebrate his career-best moment showing off his shiny white teeth and striking a modelesque pose. He has now settled down with his old appearance having cleaned up the French hotel receptionist look.
As England was gearing up with their moustaches, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 was not far behind. Mitchell Johnson had grown a moo which was a cross between a pencil moustache and a lifeless pitch.
Australia’s next entry for Movember is Ben Hilfenhaus who failed to understand the meaning of Movember. His name looks like German and an inspiration from Hitler could have worked. Instead he settled with a boy-next-door type look with minimal and light facial hair.
Peter Siddle, the Australian bowler who completed a six wicket haul in the first Test match of the Ashes, was also confused like Hilfenhaus. He clearly did not get the whole hoopla around Movemeber, but decided to jump in like Edward Cullen with his vampire like teeth to scare the England players. He should have asked help from Mr. Moustache reformer of cricket.
But the Australian self-pride held back his need to know about the moo campaign so he decided to grow a beard and not just any beard. A very teeny-tiny pencil stub of hair was grown on Mr. Hulk’s chin which would be an insult for the beard itself. He could also use the black marker that the 5-year-old was playing with.
This could only mean one thing, wait for it, Australia is losing. They are just out of the Irish pot of luck as the battle of the moustaches has undoubtedly won by Pietersen.
